BLACK CHIA SEEDS
Did you know that Chia is the English name for the plant, which comes from the Mayan word Chiabaan meaning strong or strengthening?
These powerhouse little seeds which are naturally gluten and grain free, are a concentrated food containing omega-3 fatty acids, carbohydrates, protein, fibre, antioxidants, calcium and iron.
From the herb plant Salvia hispanica (which is a member of the mint family), chia seeds have the ability to "gel" when soaked in liquid. Their outer shell is hydrophilic, giving it the ability to absorb more than ten times their weight in liquid. This means that as a food they may help to reduce appetite because they are filling. Other benefits include:
- Excellent source of protein
- High in nutrients, vitamins & minerals
- Promote energy and endurance
- Support healthy digestion
- Naturally filling so may act as an appetite surpressant
- If soaked before consumption they promote hydration during physical exercise due to their high water content.
Chia seeds are versatile and can be used in many ways.
Dry, they can be used as a sprinkle or added to smoothies and shakes.
Ground and mixed with water they create a thickener or an egg substitute in vegan cooking
Commonly they are soaked whole and feature in popular healthy puddings
It's worth nothing that if you ingest dry chia seeds, due to their hydrophilic nature, they will attract water from the body just as they do if soaked in water. For this reason it's best to drink plenty of water if consuming these seeds dry.
